Caprili Brunello di Montalcino (Red)

Caprili Brunello di Montalcino (Red) 2020 - 88

Semi-translucent with blue-ish edges. Surprisingly restrained on the nose, some blue fruit, blue flowers. Soft and powdery on the nose, and this continues on the palate. I'm finding it a bit grudgy, a bit reservd, taciturn, closed and not particularly well brought-up on the palate. The tannins, at first powdery and a bit one-dimensional, evolve t become gravelly, dry, somewhat boringly traditional. Lots of blue fruit, but either this is not showing terribly well in its youth, or it's not particularly balanced or pretty.

Caprili Brunello di Montalcino (Red) 2019 - 90

Very ripe, almost jammy cherry fruit on the nose. A touch of violets, some floral herbal notes. A tiny hint of reduction. Surprisingly fresh, youthful, fruit-forward. Nice energy. Tannins are pretty, well-extracted, with an elegance to them despite the power and weight. Generous maceration and extraction, good intensity of fruit. Very well-made, very well-structured, high quality - but with a charming simplicity to it that many of the single-vineyard Brunellos.

Caprili Brunello di Montalcino (Red) 1995 - 94

Dark mahogany. Dark floral pot-pourri, inky and mineral aromas. Beautifully fresh ripe red fruit, with stunning intensity, aromatic citrus freshness, long fresh acidity, balanced, fresh and vibrant, balanced tannins. Feels youthful and is exactly what I expected from old Brunello - improved with age and a fantastically concentrated wine. I'm not sure I can describe it - but the second you take a sip you can't feel to be enchanted by its beautiful velvet texture, elegant and poised structure, and fantastic balance of fruit despite the age and acidic tannins.
