Domaine de Fontenille Alphonse (Rosé) 2023 - OutstandingSalmon pink. Fresh, delicate and pretty aromas of pithy, perfumed Sorrento lemon and and fresh grapefruit aromas. The taste comes as a bit of a surprise. Lots of ripe opulent fruit on the palate, a hint of blackcurrants and blackberries, very much on the opulent black fruit character. Velvety texture, some spice and nice intensity finishing with a hint of salinity, crushed black pepper, a whisper of garrigue and cedar. The ripe fruit is reflected in the slightly higher alcohol on the finish. Lovely weight and extraction with plenty of fruit appearing on the finish to keep this in balance. Charming, classy, concentrated and genuinely qualitative, though still clinging on to the notion that it needs to be fresh and fruity rather than embracing its complexity and living up to its potential. Delicious.
