Canalicchio di Sopra Casaccia (Red)

Canalicchio di Sopra Casaccia (Red) 2020 - 91

Semi-translucent with brickish edges. Slightly cooked, dark chocolatey on the nose, lightly inky and torrefied. On the palate, tannins are very classically Italian, but balanced by beautifully ripe fruit. Nicely extracted, classic and traditional. Crunchy acidity, some red berries. Quite closed and powerful. Usually the single-vineyards are a nod towards ripeness and moderity, but this seems to have one foot firmly in the olde-worlde camp. Nice wine.

Canalicchio di Sopra Casaccia (Red) 2019 - 91

Intense herbal, floral, garrigue. Violets. A touch of reduction. Lots of cacao, coffee, torrefied nuts. Crunchy. Very intense, very moreish, a little blunt and clumsy. Good intensity, nice concentration, good amount of fruit. Lasting raspberry and barely ripe cherry finish. A bit brutish - needs time.

Canalicchio di Sopra Casaccia (Red) 2018 - 93

Toasty oak, subtle herbal spice and coffee grounds on the nose. Youthful and vibrant. Grounded by gorgeous long acidity, mouthwatering and crunchy. Youthful, firm, grippy chalky tannins. Crunchy, moreish, nutty. I'm really surprised by how young and cool-climate barely ripe this seems - the acidity is vibrant and energetic, the fruit is redcurrant fresh, gently floral, but oh-so-beautiful. I'd give a slight edge to the Montosoli if I had to pick one.
