Our very first report is not about one region in particular – rather it is about all rosés, and how they are made. It is not the most riveting of reads, but an essential one.
South of France
It’s impossible today to talk about rosé without mentioning Provence. It is, however, a vast region with over 20,000ha devoted to rosé, and represents an incredible diversity of terroirs.
If you only have time for one rosé in the Rhone valley, make it Tavel and the right bank. Especially around Tavel, the southern Rhone is one of rosé’s most historic heartlands, but a new wave of stunning rosés, lighter, more delicate and perhaps more modern are also appearing on the left bank around the Dentelles de Montmirail appellations of Gigondas, and Cotes du Rhone Villages Sablet and Séguret.
Italy
I have this iconoclastic feeling Etna will one day make better rosé than red wine…
