Bodegas Alvia Livius (Rosé) 2019 - ExceptionalTasted by Elizabeth Gabay MW & Ben Bernheim

100% Grenache, aged in French barriques, from one of Rioja's most Camino-de-Santiago-adjacent producers, and whose love of oak shines in this wine. Pale cherry red-pink. Intense aromas of kirsch and red berries on the nose, intense, concentrated and juicy, with cranberries, pomegranates, a touch of rosehips and blood orange. The palate moves away from being a fruit bomb to a smooth, crystalline and beautifully controlled intensity. Suave, velvety, generously fruitful and charming. Very much a clarete, light red-wine-like, with fine supporting wood tannins and fresh, balanced acidity, the tannins otherwise invisible, ripe fruit bursting from the seams. It may not be a classic rosé, but it whispers alluringly rather than shouts, and does so with absolute and utmost confidence. Stunning.
