Semi-translucent ruby. Ripe jammy red fruit, sweet spice, nutmeg, pot pourri, and some lightly raisined fruit on the nose alongside slightly smoky figs and sweet oak notes. Rich, ripe fruit on the palate, though much fresher than many, avoiding the pitfalls of both internationally oaky and fashionably zesty reds. It is tight, concentrated, driven, grouchy, and masculine rather than solar and generous. The alcohol is very well integrated. Silky, concentrated, and slightly dried-out tannins mark a very old-school sort of wine from an era before climate change. Classic and serious, it absolutely needs decanting. As it breathes, the tannins soften, the fruit opens up, and the acidity crispens up. Don't touch this until a few hours after opening the bottle!
