Principal Tête de Cuvée Rosé de Pinots (Rosé) 2020 - OutstandingTasted by Elizabeth Gabay MW & Ben Bernheim

One of Portugal's most famous (and expensive!) rosés, although made in a decidedly more approachable style in recent vintages. Very pale shell. Hints of sweet oak on the nose with pretty, exuberant red fruit, expressive and generous. Full-bodied and generous on the palate despite the low alcohol. Pretty, slightly sharp acidity on the finish with a lovely phenolic tannic grip that reminds you this is still playing in the same league as Garrus and Clos du Temple. Elegant, refreshing and very modern, reading from the classic rosé songbook rather than heading off on some adventure to Rioja. Whether it has the complexity, development and genre-defining concentration one might expect at this price is less certain, but it will please poolside sippers and serious rosé drinkers alike.
