Bastide de Fave Réserve du Prieuré (White) 2023 - RecommendedLemon yellow, very pale yellow. Oak salinity on the nose with very struck match, reductive gunflint that opens up a bit in the glass. Simple fruit - white lemon, almost green mineral acidity. It is taking itself very, very seriously and not quite delivering on the palate. The fruit is tightly restrained by quite austere tight oak, which gives austere structure and intensity. Concentrated weight but structural and textural rather than fruity. Nice weight and fruit, but the acidity is zippy and peppery, with reduction in the foreground stealing the show. Difficult but not unattractive. The finish is silky with a hint of astringency adding depth and charm.
