    Mas de Gourgonnier Réserve du Mas (Red) 2023 - Highly RecommendedTasted by Elizabeth Gabay MW & Ben Bernheim

    Ruby red, semi-translucent garnet. Sweet spice and dark plummy fruit on the nose, with a touch of reduction, a hint of struck match, gunflint and very linear Syrah discipline. Blue-black fruit and textured velvet tannins. Fresh, with some leafy freshness on the palate where Cabernet is much more evident; lightly leafy, slightly pencilly, grassy and unmistakably varietal. Very classy. Quite an ethereal delicate style, perhaps from a cooler site? There is some black pepper, pencil shavings, blackberries and blackcurrants. Vibrant acidity and rather angular tannins that last well into the finish, though a touch drying. Some might like to see a touch more sunshine and ripeness squeezed into this, but there is no denying that it is modern, crisp, fashionable and very drinkable.
