Mas des Infermieres Chevalier (Red) 2022 - OutstandingTasted by Elizabeth Gabay MW & Ben Bernheim

Mid depth ruby red. Restrained, slightly juicy red fruit on the nose with black fruit, dark cocoa, and juicy elderberries. Pretty and exuberant, with remarkable freshness juxtaposed against very pretty and slightly perfumed juiciness. The palate is a mix of subtly sweet smoky nuttiness from the oak, pithy, slightly green pippy tannins, and crisp red berry-driven fruit, all singing very different notes from the same song sheet. Firm, extracted, taut, tight wild hedgerow berries. Very classically southern red. Classy and beautifully balanced. Lovely extraction without feeling dried out. Approachable despite its youth. Not snobbishly complex, but the sort of wine I would think is a respectable gateway to something a bit heavier. Fab.
